The Food and Drug Administration has issued a temporary recall of several prescription medications after they were linked to an increased risk of death in the United States.
The agency said the Food and Drug Administration's advisory panels concluded there was no evidence that any of the drugs had increased risk, citing a lack of information from the FDA's own clinical trials.
The FDA has not determined whether the drugs contained sildenafil (Viagra), vardenafil (Levitra), tadalafil (Cialis), or avanafil (Stendra).
In a statement, the FDA said it has not received any new drug warnings related to the drugs.
The agency is requiring drug manufacturers to submit to the FDA a full list of side effects and interactions for each drug, including those related to sexual dysfunction. The agency does not recommend that drugs interact with nitrates or nitroimidazoles, or with alpha-blockers such as amlodipine.
It is not known whether sildenafil, vardenafil, tadalafil, and avanafil were linked to the drugs.
The agency also is requiring drug companies to update their labels to include information about side effects. The FDA is not seeking to stop the companies from continuing to market their drugs in the United States.
The FDA's warning label has not been updated. The agency said the agency is taking a more active role in advising consumers about this issue.
The agency is considering whether to impose a similar recall.
